After ruling out the possibility of “troops on the ground” in Iraq, President Obama has sent the USS Mesa Verde to the Persian Gulf with 550 troops aboard to join the USS HW Bush supercarrier.

Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement the Mesa Verde “provides the commander-in-chief additional options to protect American citizens and interests in Iraq, should he choose to use them.

Aside from carrying troops, the Mesa Verde is also designed to deploy landing craft and helicopters.
