According to a source in the Russian Navy’s Main Staff, the US missile cruiser Vella Gulf has entered the Black Sea.  This brings the number of NATO ships in the area to seven.

The official reason given for the warship’s presence in the Black Sea was it’s participation in NATO mine clearing exercises along with other NATO forces including: an Italian frigate and minesweeper, Turkish and British minesweepers, a Greek Corvette, and a French Frigate.

The NATO ships entered the area after it was announced that Russia would conduct it’s own maneuvers consisting of 20 ships, upwards of 20 aircraft and helicopters, as well as marines and coastal artillery units.  Russia’s Defense Ministry has said the exercises would cover the entire Black Sea area.
