Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko and US Secretary of State John Kerry discussed the coordination of a humanitarian mission to south-east Ukraine by Kiev in a telephone conversation Sunday evening.

In a statement, President Poroshenko “thanked the United States for its support, as well as informed Kerry to invite representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross to coordinate all issues on the organization of the delivery of humanitarian assistance”.

Mr. Kerry’s press service welcomed the initiative put forward by Ukraine’s President in organizing an international humanitarian mission for the people of Lugansk.

Earlier reports indicated that Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, was also in negotiations with the United Nations and the Red Cross to organize a Russian-backed humanitarian mission to aid the people of south-east Ukraine.
