Iraq’s governor of Sunni heartland, Ahmed Khalaf al-Dulaimi, has been promised US support against Islamic State, also known as IS.

The governor told reporters from Reuters the request, which was recently made in meetings with US diplomats and a senior military officer, includes air support against the Islamic State militants who now control large parts of northwestern Iraq.

Governor Dulaimi confirms that the US government has promised to help stating that the primary goal is air support from US forces.

US officials have yet to comment on the situation.
