by The Daily Lede

Internet service for Charter Communications customers is currently down and has been nationwide for most of Saturday.

Internet monitoring website, DownDetector.com, began receiving complaints of outages around 4:00 pm cdt.

Complaints were received throughout the evening on Facebook, Twitter and also on Charter’s own Twitter feed about a lack of service to subscribers.

Customer service representatives at Charter said their servers had been down since 5:30 pm Saturday.

The outage is, as of 1:40 am edt ongoing and no explanation from Charter has been given, although many posters on Twitter have suggested the problem may lie with Charter’s DNS which translates word-based Internet addresses to numerical IP addresses.

Some users have found success connecting through public DNS servers such as Google Public DNS and OpenDNS.

UPDATE:  Reports now that Internet in some parts of north Texas are functioning normally.
